The first mechanical heart valve prosthesis using this revolutionary material named Pyrolite® Carbon was implanted in 1969. CarboMedics subsequently designed and manufactured 17 different prosthetic heart valves for 16 companies. The first implant of the proprietary CarboMedics Prosthetic Heart Valve was performed in France in 1986, and in the USA in 1993.
